Product Update: A Few Changes to Blogs & Pages and the Marketing Page

Josh and I have been making a few tweaks the Shopify admin lately. The visual changes might take a few minutes to get used to, but they make doing things like adding promo codes and managaging blog articles easier.

Here is a before and after of the new blogs and pages UI (old on the left, new on the right)....

We also added the ability to bulk manage comments, so you can spam, delete, publish, etc multiple comments at once. You can also filter your comments by their status (articles also have the filter option as well).

We also redesigned the marketing page and renamed it to “promotions”. Like Blogs & Pages this is a simple redesign to make it easier to view and manage discount codes.

Although some of you will be sad to hear that this design was purely visual, it does give us a platform to add new promotion tools in the near future to help your shop sell even better.

    Can you please add the ability to have product specific coupons instead of sitewide stuff. This is probably on the top 5 things people have wanted added for years now.

    Shopify is awesome but really needs this

    Looks clean! Much better.

    UI question: Should the “Write a new article” link have a more prominence than the “Create a new page” and “Create a new blog” links? Assume most stores write many more posts than they do creating pages or whole new blogs… :) Its also confusing for some people – ive had employees create new blogs when the meant to write a blog post.

    @Casey: It’s a good point. The reason why “write a new article” is on the farthest right is because of something called “Fitts Law” . It means that things on the edge of a box are easier to hit than things that are in the middle of a box (so it’s easier to hit “create a new article” than it is to “create a new blog”).

    Should it be given more prominence? Yes in theory, but every time you make an element stand out more you are making the page busier and more difficult to parse for new users. One of the tricks to a usable interface is to try and make elements stand out using a theory called “smallest effective difference”. That theory stipulates that you must make an element stand out using the smallest amount of visual difference as possible to avoid clutter.

    Maybe something like this would help the issue – it seems a little strange to have only one action inside of a dropdown, but users wouldn’t accidentally create a new blog instead of an article much.

    We haven’t done thorough user testing for this UI yet, so I will definitely keep your comments in mind Casey! I really appreciate your feedback.

    @Sean I agree with you. There are tons of features that we are working on for Shopify right now and I’m positive that expanding coupon functionality is a priority at this time. We might even go above and beyond your expectations.

    That principle Fitt’s law doesn’t apply to any box, it only applies to boxes that provide movement-bounds for the cursor, like the screen.

    I guess you can interpret the law strictly like that, but your mind subconsciously creates boxes around groups of interface elements.

    For example the “close” icon in OS X is on the furthest left of the box –, because out of the 3 options closing applications is arguable the most used action it is in the location where it is easiest to hit with the minimum amount of consequences.

    I’ve only brushed the surface of Fitts law it’s more complex and they’re definitely better examples than they way I interpreted it in this scenario:

    Rather than bulk manage blog comments, why not put in a captcha filter to blog comments so there’s less spam to begin with?

    It would be great if you could allow blog articles to be set to published in the future. This would allow me to do a bunch of them for the month at one time vs having to log in every couple days to copy/paste what I’ve prepared. Thanks.

    @Derek: We use a system called Defensio which helps automatically filter spam comments for our users. Everytime a Shopify store owner hits the spam button for a comment it registers in the Defensio system and they are less likely to receive bulk spam from that author.

    Please can I ask, why an earth are using up valuable resources making visual improvements to the admin system when they is a long list of much needed updates that surely must take priority, to name but a few:

    Much needed improvements to your marketing section. (Very weak in comparison to Magento Go) Per product vouchers, group offers, shipping discounts, gift cards :
    Edit customer shipping details.
    Allow us to change order items.
    Process order exchanges.
    Cancel/refund or exchange individual order items.
    Related / grouped products.

    All this icing on the cake is great but remember you guys take a cut of our sales and unless we see the product going somewhere seriously the arguments for leaving you guys for another solution are just mounting up!

    Are these are all in hand and on your road map, please please keep us updated, we never know what your next move is?!?

    I would really appreciate some feedback from you guys.
