Why Entrepreneurs Shouldn't Care About a Work-Life Balance

The concept of a harmonious work-life balance has taken the business world by storm.

It has become the buzzword around the office, it crosses many lips at corporate events, and professional social networks like LinkedIn are flooded with discussions regarding this apparent fusion between work and life.

But bizarrely, entrepreneurs have also been reeled into this concept, questioning their routines and commitments for perhaps the first time in years.

As a man who has spent the last four years of his life working at all hours of the day, from anywhere in the world with an internet connection, I have an opinion on the concept of a work-life balance for entrepreneurs – and I’d like to share it.

Entrepreneurs Don’t Need a Work-Life Balance

There, I said it.

The concept of the perfect work-life balance is touted by ambitious yet bored professionals who feel like their work schedule is slowing taking over their lives (and it probably is).

So, the idea of a work-life balance sprang into existence in order to counteract the problems faced by those working in environments that entrepreneurs have fought so brazenly to escape from.

Traditional jobs that involve long commutes and long hours of sitting in an office sap time and energy from a person’s day. For such professionals, the concept of a work-life balance makes sense.

But trying to apply such a ‘balance’ to the life of an entrepreneur is like putting armbands on Michael Phelps. They were useful when he started out, but now that he has carved out his own path to success, they’re nothing but a hindrance.

You see, as an entrepreneur, you’ve already sidestepped the struggle of your job taking up a set amount of daylight hours. You, my entrepreneurial friend, are able to manage your time as you please.

So instead of needing to inject personal time into a work-dominated schedule, entrepreneurs have a more basic question to answer throughout their daily lives:

What takes priority, right now?

It’s All About Priorities

As an entrepreneur, the fine line between your working hours and personal time is drawn by nothing but your priorities.

Each day is different of course, as errands need to be run, families need to be loved, and leisure needs to be had.

But with the flexible schedule of an entrepreneur, you can prioritise your daily tasks in order to fit it all in, simply by prioritising activities and managing your time – and there are tools that can help with that.

Don’t get me wrong, your day should consist of hard work, but that work should be bedded into a schedule that suits you and your personal life right down to the ground.

Otherwise, you’re wasting one of the key benefits associated with being an entrepreneur.

Over To You

With the freedom that you enjoy as an entrepreneur, it’s up to you to set your priorities, and then it’s up to you to mould a work schedule around your personal life.

There should be no ‘balance’ between the two – rather – it should be one beautifully entwined life of passion and personal progress.
