Introduce your business and tell us your story: How did you decide on what to sell, and how did you source your products?
We discovered an avenue with our medium that was untapped and began offering one-of-a-kind painted apparel to our customers online in addition to offering our body painting services at festivals. All of our products are painted by our small crew of creators in-house.
How did you earn your first sales? Which channels are now generating the most traffic and sales for you?
We had a large social media following from traveling and exhibiting our artwork at so many music festivals across the nation. When we transferred from our old website host to Shopify we experienced a massive increase in sales due to the simplified customer experience offered by the template we chose. Festivals are still our largest selling channel, but Shopify has offered our brand a way to keep sales rolling in 24/7 while giving us a chance to generate profits in the off-season.
Tell us about the back-end of your business. What tools and apps do you use to run your store? How do you handle shipping and fulfillment?
We use a lot of the BOLD apps to help users engage with more of our products - a huge success for us has been using The Motivator app to encourage customers to add a second item to their cart for a free black light flashlight. They get more colorful merch, we make additional revenue, and they also then have a way to exhibit their products under ultra-violet light to their friends which ultimately leads to more sales. Win/win! We handle all of our shipping internally through the help of ShipStation. The streamlining of this process has made it easy to keep up with the increase of orders, even when we get back from being on tour and have a LOT of products to ship out.
What are your top recommendations for new store owners?
Running your own business is a lot of hard work, but if you've got the passion and willingness to constantly improve every facet of your image, you're going to find success in what you do.
